July 24th- Monroe style...

Monroe, Utah doesn't have much going for it. On the main street of my hometown there are two stores, two restaurants, a library, and a movie store. There isn't even a stop light. However, this is definitely the place to be for a rockin' 24th of July celebration!

After a filling breakfast, the festivities start with a parade on Main Street. The parade mostly consists of tractors, new and old, old souped up cars, high school bands, the drill team, and cheerleaders; as well as the junior drill team and cheerleaders. Oh, let's not forget the local beauty queens !
Here come the cars!

Chris helping Serena and KC gather in the loot!

After lunch, we head over the mountain to Marysvale, which is literally a dip in the road. If you blink, you would miss the whole town! In Marysvale, there is a small rodeo. The highlight of the entertainment is the 'Chicken Run'. The rules consist of the kids (broken into age groups), start at one end of the arena and run to the other end to catch the chickens. If you are lucky enough to catch a chicken, your prise is a crisp $5 bill and... you can keep the chicken, if you want to! I have never felt the urge to participate in the sport but it is a hoot to watch!

The boy in the yellow shirt is proudly walking back to the stands with his prize and chicken in hand!

The night ends with a concert and fireworks. My mom insists on going early to the fireworks to buy raffle tickets. Apparently, she wins something every year. This year they had para gliders fly over the field right before the fireworks started. Although the show is small, the fireworks are so much fun! They are right in your face and after the show, you have to dust the ashes off each other!
If you squint, you can see the gliders. Please excuse my camera!

Happy 24th of July!
